Nearly 350 varieties of old tomatoes, accompanied by aromatic herbs, can be discovered during the last weekend of August, the 25th and 26th in Migennes (89). Cultivated in their gardens by members of the Horticultural Society of Yonne, all the tomatoes will be offered for tasting.
This festival of ancient tomatoes aims to introduce amateur gardeners and lovers of the vegetable garden to varieties brought up to date, sometimes long forgotten. Pleasure for the eyes but also taste and cultural pleasure since each variety is presented labeled with a reminder of its origins and history, accompanied by aromatic herbs that suit it. Culinary events are also on the program of this event organized by members of the Horticultural Society of Yonne. Jean-Marc Huot, collector of varieties of old tomatoes will come to present amazing tomatoes by their sizes or their colors during a conference during these days. In garden centers and specialized stores you can generally find 20 to 25 varieties of old or contemporary tomatoes. This goes for the old varieties, from the cherry tomato to the pineapple tomato which is a very large fleshy yellow fruit which can reach 400 g, the horned Andean variety, very fragrant that Vilmorin markets, the beef heart which owes its name to its heart shape, Crimean black, or green tomato "Green Zebra" which also exists in a variety called "cherry". Fans of "contemporaries" will find themselves with "Roma" or "Olivette", "Pyros" or "Saint-Pierre". If you are creating a vegetable patch on the balcony, prefer the so-called "determined" tomatoes which will produce over a period of six weeks until the end of July. This will avoid the laborious dilemma of the holidays.
